Issues with Windows XP
PROBLEM
Many of you have seen previous communications
from myself regarding issues with Encarta Encyclopedia 2001, Money 2001, Works
6.0, and Works Suite 2001/2002 that may arise when these products are preinstalled
with Windows XP. The issues and resolutions are summarized below:
As a reminder, OEMs who wish to pre-install
or distribute Windows XP and also Money, Encarta Encyclopedia, Works, or Works
Suite should be strongly advised to ship only the corresponding 2002 products
with Windows XP, which are noted in the Windows Catalog to be compatible with
or designed for Windows XP.
Details
Works 6.0
- Issues
- When non-English versions
of Works 6.0 (or products containing Works 6.0) are preinstalled with
Windows XP, an error message appears after a predetermined number of reboots
of the system, and then reappears with each subsequent reboot. The system
will run normally once the error message is cleared. This is caused by
a feature that must be disabled.
- When Works 6.0 English versions
are preinstalled with Windows XP, the feature appears without an error
message.
- This marketing feature displays
a dialog box that describes various preinstalled applications on the system.
The feature must be disabled to eliminate the error message and for compliance
with Windows XP OPK requirements.
- Products Affected
- Works 6.0, Works 6.0/Money
2001, Works 6.0/Money 2002, Works Suite 2001, Works Suite 2002
- Products Compatible with Windows
XP
- Works Suite 2002 is compatible
with Windows XP. However, the above-referenced feature must be disabled.
- Resolution
- OEMs have received a supplement
which:
- Requires OEMs to disable
the feature in affected products from the master image prior to preinstalling
the applications, by running WKSFIX.exe.
- Includes the WKSFIX.exe
files and the right to redistribute this to end-users.
- The supplement letter
also indicates that licensed OEMs may obtain an end user deliverable
from the Authorized Replicators.
Money 2001, 2002

Money 2001 and Earlier, All Languages
- Issues
- Pre-installed on Windows
XP PCs, Money 2001 users may experience unintended installation issues
that result from the multi-user functionality in Windows XP.
- The application may not function
correctly until users reinstall it separately for each user profile.
- Products Affected
- All language versions of
Money 2001, all Money products released prior to Money 2001, Works / Money
2001 pack, and English and French versions of Works Suite 2001.

to OEMs who are currently licensing Works Suite 2001 English NA, which
includes Money 2002.
- A one-way amendment is available
for OEMs who are currently licensed for Money 2001 stand-alone, which
will also license them for Money 2002.
Encarta Encyclopedia 2001
- Issues
- The English UK version of
Encarta Encyclopedia Standard 2001 requires the user to accept the EULA
each time the application is launched on a system running Windows XP.

of Encarta Encyclopedia 2001 require the OEM to clear a warning dialog
box during preinstallation.

2002 is strongly recommended for preinstallation with Windows XP.
